Sarah Breedlove , 1867 – 1919
In the winter of 1867, on a cotton plantation in Delta, Louisiana, a baby girl named Sarah Breedlove entered the world — the first of her family to be born free. By the time Sarah was seven, she had lost both parents to illness. Orphaned, she went to live with her older sister Louvenia and a harsh brother-in-law. To escape their cruelty, Sarah married at just 14 years old. But fate was not kind — her husband, Moses McWilliams, died when she was only 20, leaving her a young widow with a small daughter to feed.
With nowhere else to turn, Sarah headed to St. Louis, where her brothers worked as barbers. She scrubbed floors and washed laundry by hand for a dollar a day. The work was grueling, and the chemicals and conditions caused her hair to thin and fall out — a problem faced by many Black women at the time.
Then came a turning point. Sarah began experimenting with home remedies, trying to restore her hair’s health. Around this time, she met Annie Malone, a successful Black haircare entrepreneur who hired Sarah as a sales agent. For the first time, Sarah saw what was possible — a business of her own, serving women who had long been ignored by the mainstream beauty industry.
In 1906, Sarah married Charles Joseph Walker, a newspaper advertising salesman, and took the name Madam C. J. Walker. Together, they launched her own line of haircare products, starting with her “Wonderful Hair Grower.” Sarah was not just selling hair products — she was selling dignity, confidence, and economic independence to Black women.
